Don’t you just love when surprises seem to fall out of nowhere? 

I opened up my Facebook feed a while ago, and there was a “share your memories ” post from 2014. 

As fate would have it, it was a something I’d written to my grandma Wilma 2 years ago today. Along with my message, was a recipe of hers that I stumbled across in a cookbook and at the time I was showing it to her. 

If you’ve been around here awhile, you’ll know how much I love and admire my grandma Wilma. She was an amazing woman and was 96 years old when she left this earth for Heavenly adventures. 

Before she passed, I wrote some nice stories about her. One is called, “Windows” and is one of my favorite stories ever. Here is the link, if you’re interested in reading it. 

Another one I really like is called “Written Words” which tells about these folders full of writing that she and grandpa gave for Christmas presents for 11 years. You can read it here, if you want. 

The  day she passed away, my feelings poured out on the page and “She Wore Iowa Well” was born. 

She was definitely smiling down on me that day, because that story still has the most views of any I’ve ever written before or since, and it was even read at her funeral. You could find it here, if you’d like. 

After she passed, I wrote another story about her called, “Her Voice”. It’s about an afternoon surprise that Little Bit and I got out of the blue on Valentine’s Day . The link to it is here, if you’d like to take a peek. 

I guess now is the perfect day for sharing memories of her and that recipe as well. It’s seems funny to me how they so eloquently popped back into my life via Facebook today. 

You see, I was never  even going to get on Facebook. Like ever. But, I eventually took the plunge and I did so only for one reason: 

Grandma was on there. 

Love how things like that happen sometimes. 

Oh, one last thing, at her services, the minister said something that was one of those stop-you-in-your-tracks-true statements:

“Wilma put the Amazing in Grace.”

Yes, she most certainly did!

  3. Such a wonderful unexpected surprise for you; giving you another opportunity to visit such wonderful warm memories. Was you grandma on FB before you? I like the recipe start ‘easy…’ – my kind of recipe to follow!

    • Hi Annika. Oh yes!! She was on Facebook for about two years before I was. She was very “verbal” too on her political opinions! Which we all loved, because in 90 years, she saw a lot of change in this country and pretty much saw what worked and what didn’t. Ha! She was very educated, a teacher.

      Yes! Easy is my kind of recipe favorite too. It’s a very good pie. I’ve made it myself. :)

  6. Your so lucky. I barely knew my grandmother, but I was in the room when she took her last breath. That moment, and the realization of the entirety of my loss, will be with me forever.

  8. Such a heart warming post Jessica, all of it. I read every single link so I could go right back to the beginning and share in all of the love you felt for your amazing Grandma. And how wonderful that it popped up on Facebook today, it was all meant to be. Just beautiful Jess. xox :)

  9. What beautiful memories your Grandma has given you! It’s so strange that you posted this today, as today one of my brothers and I were visiting on the phone and we were talking about our Grandma. I told him I had some of her handwritten recipes, he wanted to know which ones, as I was reading them to him, he requested one and I took a picture and sent it to him. (I love your countertop in the recipe photo!!) I have always wanted to frame some of her and my mom’s recipes to hang in my kitchen and I picked out some for my brothers and me. I have a framing project that I just started with some of her handkerchiefs, I will add this project to it!! You really motivate me!! Thanks again for a beautiful post.

    • Oh my goodness!! That is crazy! It must be a grandma type day! My brother didn’t even know about my blog post and just sent me a picture of her farm that he took yesterday! I about fell over! Then, I read your comment!

      I love your idea about framing the handkerchiefs and recipes! I have some of both! That is so awesome. I also saw this post on Facebook today that was really neat.

      They took an empty picture frame and tied like a piece of twine lengthwise across it. Then they clothespinned a little teddy bear so it was framed in the middle.

      That would work well with just about any sort of keepsake, including recipe cards!
