Do you ever pick a direction and just start driving?
Like with no map or GPS?
Sounds a bit scary right?
I mean, why would anyone do such a thing in this day and age of always knowing exactly where we’re going and right where we’ve been?
Honestly, it’s just something we do.
For fun.
Yesterday was one of those days we needed to stay home. We’ve been gone every day for a week.
I’m pretty sure that same poor load of clothes I’ve washed three times in a row, was begging me to put them in the dryer.
Yeah, I’m definitely behind on my chores. Too bad those darn dishes don’t wash themselves!
So yesterday, I drew the line. “We’re not going anywhere. We’re staying home!”, I told myself. I had too much to do.
Well…
I did get some chores done.
But by 6 p.m., I had my keys in my hand and we were off!
We’ve been on nearly every southern and eastern backroad in this county, so we chose one we hadn’t been on and headed north.
There we were, just me and Little Bit, windows down, hair blowing, Bob Seager blaring in the speakers.
It’s getting close to the change of season here. It’s still summer, yet the smell of fall is in the air and that made for a really amazing drive.
Our route took us through a couple of tiny towns we’ve never been to, and ended at a road we’ve been on a million times.
Chasing the sunset, we ended up in a neighboring town at a park we love and had just enough light left for some picture taking.
What a glorious evening.
On the way back, a giant moon introduced itself over an open pasture, and led us home.
My, how I love drawing out these long days of summer and making memories just by getting a little lost.
How does that quote go, “when we get lost we find ourselves”. Love your pics. It’s just what I used to do when the kids were little, pack up and drive! :)

Oh man, I LOVE that quote. How true is that!!??!! I love that you used to pack up the kids and drive… That makes my heart smile!
We just got home from driving again. You should see the full moon. It’s huge!! So beautiful. Got some good pictures tonight, too.
Drove last night, too. Camera free. Just took in the view. We’ve been going at sunset all week. ☀️

How awesome. Do you know Jess, on the night of mum’s funeral the moon was as big as I’ve ever seen it, in my entire life. It was massive with the most flaming sunset. I didn’t get any pictures unfortunately but the memory will always stay with me. xo

A lovely story of your adventure, Jessica. You’re right to enjoy every moment of summer – I feel a tang of autumn in the air now and then! The other day my son and I too a short-cut. You know the ones where they become the long way round. Ended up on the smallest mud lane ever, just the width of the car. I kept panicking what would happen if we met another car – there was no way I could reverse for miles! We had a fun laugh though – hysterically mostly!😀

Oh my gosh!!! Sounds intense- I love the hysterically the most! I can just picture you two laughing!! Great memories were made that day with you two!

Beautiful photos Jessica!!! I felt like I was riding along with you and Little Bit!!! Those chores can wait, they will always be there, that little guy in the seat next to you is all that matters!!!💕

Awwwww…. You make me smile, girl. That’s exactly what I was thinking. The summer of 9 is winding down, it’s passed so quick, I’m going to squeeze in every last drop of momma and son time. If he asks, we go! 💗

They grow up so fast and grandkids grow up even faster. Slow down!!! I know you cherish every moment, so do I.

What an amazing time you must have had! My husband and I love driving too. Well, I drive. :) Just going somewhere. Somewhere new… it definitely beats doing the laundry! :D

Ha ha ha!!!! You got that right- laundry can wait. Those clothes may walk by themselves before they ever make it to the dryer!!
I figured you were an adventurous type- somewhere new is so fun! 🌷

I love this post! My husband and I do this on Sunday afternoons. As a kid my family would pick up my Grandma and just drive in our non air conditioned Plymouth. I can remember my Dutchy grandma telling us to close the window because there was such a “draft” (and roll those r’s)
Those photos are also amazing!

Hi! Welcome to my blog! I’m SO excited that you’re here!! :)
I absolutely love your story, I can just picture a Grandma and a family in a Plymouth, cruising around. Love the rolled R’s.
My grandparent’s on my mom’s side were all German and had the best accents… Miss those.
I love that you and your husband do this on Sunday afternoons. That’s sooooo great. Is it a rural area?

Yes it is. We live smack dab in the middle of 4 very small rural towns. (We tell people we are so far in the sticks that we don’t even grow sticks) Our nearest large city is 60 miles away.

Oh man! That’s funny!! I tell everyone we live in the toolies and they’re like, “What?” Ha!
So when you go to “town”, aka city, you’ve got a ways to go. We have 30 miles to bowling, movies, etc.

20 miles to movies, 10 miles to bowling, 10 to groceries in a pinch, 20 to discount stores, 60 for serious shopping. And only 10 to our closest Pizza Ranch!! that one is important :).

Not bad at all. How lucky! I love small town bowling alleys. Love that about the Pizza Ranch! :)
We have a lake cabin that’s so far in the sticks that ice cream melts before we get from the store 30 miles out, to it. Curvyyyyy roads. :)

Thanks for saying the photos are amazing. There’s a little log cabin at that park and it sits in an old cemetery. We hit the light just right with the sunset behind it. I love that building. I think I may do another post with more photos of it. They turned out pretty cool. :)

I love the little log cabin. We have a town close by that has a log cabin that was moved there as it was on the first settled place in our county.

Thank you for including the flag. To many people choose to ignore it and what it stands for.

I love that flag! :) Means something to me, my family, my friends. :)

I love to do this! We were on our way home from a cross country trip once and we’re stuck in traffic. I knew which general direction I needed to go and we got off the highway. It was so much fun. We all should do it more!

Oh! I love that you did that!! Bet everyone was happier. Interstates certainly have their purpose, but I love the idea of Route 66 and little towns and diners.
I agree with you! Let’s do it more! :)

Best ever! Which reminds me – havent done that in a long time….not intentionally anyway. I am one of those people who gets lost all the time..GPS or not, so I get to see some neighborhoods I never was in anyway…..

Wow! Thanks! Oh my, sounds like you’re set up for the scenic route! Which is great unless you’re in a hurry! Ha! :)

Good for you! I have done this-my grandmother and I would ride down unfamiliar country roads, just because they looked pretty and they were! Sweet and inspiring post!

Hi! Awww! I love that you and your grandmother did this. That reminds me of when my grandparents lived way out on the farm. Loved those roads.
Thank you so much. Trying to savor my kiddo while he’s still little. Hopefully he’ll have all these rides in his memory bank when he’s grown up.

Those are the best kind of trips. My parents are famous for doing that. My hubby and I have taken an entire vacation just based on Lets go south. Drive until we hit warm. It was a blast. We did finally hit warm.

Yes, yes, yes! We used to do it when we were kids in our first family car, Dad would let each one of us take turns to decide whether we turned left or right at a junction and see where it came out. And just a few weeks ago, my hb and I did it for my birthday outing. I have yet to write about it, but yes, I love doing that in the summer! Sounds a lovely evening, too ☺️👏🏻
