Earlier this week we were in the back yard and Little Bit asked me if I could water the sunflowers.
I turned around to see that their beautiful blooms were hanging heavy, looking towards the ground.
Seems that their days of posing for pictures have been replaced by the need to work to produce seeds.
I’ve been keeping an eye on them and watching them change. The petals are drying up some and falling to the grass leaving a small bit of yellow.
I love how nature knows it’s job and just gets it done.
A few minutes ago, I walked out there and got the biggest surprise!
In the crooks of the stems, where the leaves grow, the sweetest little flowers are blooming!

Thank you so much. I was thinking of those lovely flowers this week while the weatherman was calling for ice. The garden is wearing it’s winter coat now, but the memories remain in my mind. Thanks for your nice comment! :)

So nice!!! What’s the process for harvesting the seeds?

That’s a great question! Last time I tried it, they would not come loose. It was really hard. I just read that the flowers have to be completely dried out and not have any moisture once the drying process begins.
Supposedly, once they are dry, the heads can either be rubbed with a stiff brush, or 2 can be rubbed together to loosen the seeds. I hope to do some more reading on it. :)

Hmmm that doesn’t sound too hard but of course when you try it it’s probably the hardest thing hahahaha The online DIYs make it look so easy.

It does sound easy. I definitely didn’t do something right last time. Ha. Mostly what I remember was that they were stuck and pointy. Thanks for your comment. Made me laugh! :)

Love the beach ones, too. :) Looks like a neat place. Really like the railroad tracks and the structures with graffiti. And, the one with the sunglasses was funny. Is that a black lab? We have one- he’s 14. :)

Oh my gosh. You have no idea how fitting that is! There’s a pressure system over us which is giving me a nice headache, and the clouds are built up and it lightning and thunders, but NO RAIN. I really wish it would rain.

They will love your seeds. Are you just going to leave them on the stalks or will you hand them up to dry out! I always opt for the “natural” way. Less work for me😃.

It IS a lot of work to get them out! We tried that one year. Maybe we’ll just let nature run its course this time. :) Unless we get antsy. Ha!

Hi. Thank you. I’m interested to see them turn completely to seed. The outer edges are starting. I can’t wait til the birds have a feast!! Our winter feeders are near the garden, too. :)
