Weathered Gray

Although we didn’t have as bad a winter as they’d called for, I’ll sure be glad if spring ever stakes its claim.

Right now we seem stuck between the two seasons: wearing shorts one day, long underwear the next.

And, the recurrent theme right now?

No sun.

The color of the days falls somewhere in the midst of charcoal smeared with a smidgen of white.

Yuck. That gets old.

Something really cool happened a few days ago. We found a place that is the perfect cross between where black and white feel quite at home.

About forty miles from here is a seed farm that is bathed in old fashioned. As soon as our truck door opened, we stepped back into the 1800’s.

The “town” consists of a blacksmith shop, apothecary, seed store, barn, and a restaurant.

While bits of color were sprinkled here and there, I was reminded that there is an absolute beauty in weathered gray.

The seed farm looks so interesting. I love objects of historical interest. I hope your weather starts to improve soon – winter can become quite dreary.

It’s a neat place. I bet you’d really like it. Thank you. The sun is actually SHINING RIGHT NOW. (Don’t blink! Ha!)

Such a beautiful place. I hope for more sunshine and warmth here too…

Go back when all the gardens are lush and you won’t believe the difference. Talk about beauty! I visited Baker Creek in Missouri a couple of years ago, and am so glad I did. It’s far from me or I would go often. I loved the apothecary shop, and spent a bundle at the seed store.

    • Jessica April 6, 2017 / 9:40 am

Oh my goodness, I’m soooo excited that you’ve been there!! Now I can’t wait to go back! There were a few blooms- black violets, red tulips, splashes of purple and pink, but now I want to see it ALL colored up!! Loved the propane tank painted like a giant watermelon. I can see why you spent a bundle at theses store! I love the fabric section, book section, and of course- the seeds. The apothecary shop was really neat. Thank you for commenting! It’s so nice to “meet” you!

I hope that they sell seeds for some of the traditional varieties. They may not produce to our modern tastes – but they produce better taste.

    • Jessica April 6, 2017 / 9:34 am

Hi there. They actually have nearly 2,000 varieties of heirloom seeds and they are all non-GMO. Their website is http://www.rareseeds.com and they send out free seed catalogs. I agree with what you mentioned about better tastes in the traditional varieties. Yum! Heirloom tomatoes!

Our first blue sky and sun today after three weeks of grey. I’ll try to send it your way!

Beautiful, interesting photos! Would love to visit a place like that! Over here, spring hasn’t started yet, either. The sun has made an appearance occasionally, like today, but it’s always very windy and the wind is super cold. Then there’s rain (usually on weekends!) and last week it snowed… Grey, black and white – yep, so tired of those colors! :) Well, we just need to be patient, it will come one day…

    • Jessica April 6, 2017 / 11:34 am

Thank you. I bet you’d like it. It’s much different than the beautiful white and colored buildings in your photos. It’s amazing how different building materials change the feel of a place.

I hear you one the windy and super cold. Right now I’m standing on a hill outside, watching my Little Bit who is having his horse riding lesson. This wind definitely has something to say!!!! It’s whipping all around. Ha! Oh, and it’s freezing. Like my hands are frozen! But, it’s SUNNY! We’ll take it!

There’s this old time, laid back feel in the town that you live in. Must be a beautiful place.

    • Jessica April 6, 2017 / 9:52 am

Hi! Definitely so. This whole are sings of history. And, these hills have a beauty all their own.

I hope you’re getting some sun! It came out here sometime this morning. I’m hoping it sticks around for the weekend!

    • Jessica April 6, 2017 / 11:28 am

Isn’t it crazy how much we miss it?? I hope you get it for the weekend, too. It’s out here, at the moment, but dang!!! It’s COLD!

      • Sarah Ferguson and Choppy April 7, 2017 / 11:13 am

Our walk this morning was sunny but cold, too! It’s supposed to warm up all day. I may have to get in a quick afternoon walk if it does!

        • Jessica April 8, 2017 / 12:54 am

Oh!! I hope it warmed up for you!!

          • Jessica April 9, 2017 / 9:53 pm

Oh, that’s sooooo awesome. It was in the 70’s with blue skies here! Could hardly believe it! :)

          • Sarah Ferguson and Choppy April 11, 2017 / 9:34 am

I’ll take any of those this time of year – it’s still early for us to have days like that!

  9. Weird Guy With The Dog April 7, 2017 / 7:29 am

Love the old “corn bread” skillet hanging in the doorway. You could heat them in a campfire and cook in the outdoors!

    • Jessica April 8, 2017 / 12:57 am

Hi there! I thought that was a great angle for a picture. Love the barn off in the distance. Yes, those cornbread pans are the best!! Crispy homemade cornbread sounds yummy! Do you have one? We have a couple. My husband collects Griswold cast iron. That’s all I cook in for myself.

        • Jessica April 8, 2017 / 10:55 am

Awesome!! So what’s your big plan?? I saw you hint around on your post. ☀️🌻

          • Weird Guy With The Dog April 8, 2017 / 11:45 am

Shhh, its a secret! At least until I write the post!😏

          • Jessica April 8, 2017 / 12:01 pm

Come on! Give me a hint!!!

    • Jessica April 8, 2017 / 12:52 am

I guess we do. :) Thanks for reading!

Come over!! I’ll take you there!

  10. thechickengrandma April 8, 2017 / 10:03 pm

What a cool place! I would definitely visit there and stroll around. Love it and your photos show it so well.

    • Jessica April 8, 2017 / 11:18 pm

Come visit!!! We can go there and to then Laura Ingalls Wilder place. Thank you. I had a lot of fun taking those pictures. You’d love the seed store. It’s primitive, yet splashed with modern. I loved all the quilting patterns and material. Plus, there was about a million books there I’d like to have. Ha.

      • thechickengrandma April 9, 2017 / 12:12 pm

quilts!!! And Jessica!!! now I do need to get down there! Oh….my sister in law was in a Lebanon area home school group. They did music classes in Springfield, had track teams, proms, etc. She said they were a good bunch of people.

        • Jessica April 9, 2017 / 12:21 pm

          Yes maam, quilts. Do come!

Oh, ok, I will look up Lebanon area homeschool groups. I think I remember hearing that there is a nice one over there. That’s not very far from us. Thank you so much!

          • thechickengrandma April 9, 2017 / 2:01 pm

I know my nieces and nephews participated in track, cross country, art classes, orchestra etc through this group.

          • Jessica April 9, 2017 / 2:44 pm

Wow! That’s a lot of amazing stuff! Thank you for telling me about it. I appreciate that so much!

It’s like Little House on the Prairie! I could lose myself in those seed packets. I love vintage style

    • Jessica April 10, 2017 / 12:20 pm

Hi. Welcome to my blog! So excited to see you here! What a great point- I didn’t even think about it looking like Little House on the Prairie!

If you love vintage style seed packs, you would really, really love that seed store. It’s very old fashioned and there are just shelves FULL of every kind of seed you can think of and more! So fun!

      • PaperPuff April 10, 2017 / 2:26 pm

        I would be bulk buying, I think….

        • Jessica April 10, 2017 / 2:33 pm

I understand. I only bought 3 packages, but have my eye on about a million more. With every seed purchase, they give one package of seeds. I was excited to get a heirloom tomato seed packet for free.

The prices were super reasonable, I thought, especially because all of their are non-
GMO. They also have free catalogs. Their website is http://www.rareseeds.com if you’d like to check them out. I don’t know them, but a lot of my friends go there for seeds.

          • PaperPuff April 10, 2017 / 3:46 pm

Might be a great source of inspiration. Thank you!

          • Jessica April 10, 2017 / 3:58 pm

            You’re very welcome.

        • Jessica April 10, 2017 / 2:36 pm

I just checked their website and they are out of the paper catalog. It looks like there is a PDF version, though.

          • PaperPuff April 10, 2017 / 3:44 pm

Thanks so much! I will check it out.

          • Jessica April 10, 2017 / 3:58 pm

            Awesome!

  12. PaperPuff April 10, 2017 / 12:10 pm

Whoops, I hit ‘send’ accidentally part way through my comment. I meant to say I love the vintage style packaging! All that to just add one word!

  13. thecobweboriumemporium April 12, 2017 / 5:54 am

What an absolutely, incredibly beautiful, charm filled post. I LOVED all the photos. They enabled me to be there with you.

Aw Jessica …. I wouldn’t have wanted to leave. How incredible to find such a wonderful place, where time went slower and no one was in a hurry. Perfect. Loved it.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
    Sending love ~ Cobs. x

    • Jessica April 12, 2017 / 8:49 am

You spoil me with your words here! Thank you for such a heartfelt compliment. I’m so glad we finally went there. Occasionally they have festivals and thousands of people go, that scared me off a bit, ha. I’m not one for a huge crowd. But, going on a Tuesday was really nice. I love that you loved all the pictures. Maybe it’ll be sunny next time we go and I can show you a weather gray in sunlight! 😊☀️ Hope you have a beautiful day!
